Laurel Highlands recap October 29, 2013
Richland added to the longest winning streak in Laurel Highlands this week by beating Central Cambria, 42-14. The victory was the ninth in a row for the Rams.
Forest Hills moved up to 259 from 293 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Rangers were able to move up by beating Greater Johnstown 39-0.
Matt Shaffer threw for 271 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was 11-16 with 0 interceptions.
Sam Finotti was a key player and the best on defense this week as Richland topped the Red Devils. The 6-foot-4 senior recorded 1 fumble.
Shaffer put up the best numbers through the air as Brandon Bailey's team bested Central Cambria. Shaffer's favorite target this week was Kyle Flick, who caught 4 passes for 136 yards.
Richland's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Rams feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Shaffer has thrown for 1,877 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, while Flick has 37 catches for 764 yards.
Sam Curry of the Westmont Hilltop is just 48 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 196 carries Curry has put up 952 yards this year.
The Rams' Shaffer is within 123 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Bellwood-Antis.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Penn Cambria takes on Somerset. As it stands, the Panthers are in ninth, while the Eagles are in second.
The Trojans lost to Forest Hills 39-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jayvon Braxton ran for 63 yards in the defeat.
