Baseball Recap: Hazelwood Central Wins Going Away Against Normandy

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against STEAM Academy at McCluer South Berkeley, Hazelwood Central was happy to have turned things around on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Normandy Vikings a 17-0 shutout. That 17 run margin sets a new team best for the Hawks this season.

Jace Dickson was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Hazelwood Central is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 1-2 otherwise. Dickson was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. Dickson is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least one every time he's taken the field this season.

In other batting news, Mekhi Maclin and Derrick Young did most of the damage at the plate: Maclin scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances, while Young went 1-for-2 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Hazelwood Central is undefeated when Maclin posts two or more runs, but 1-2 otherwise. Daveion Edwards was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Hazelwood Central has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Normandy, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hazelwood Central will head out to face off against McCluer at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. As for Normandy, they will venture away from home to square off against Bayless at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
