Discovery Canyon hasn't had much luck against Cheyenne Mountain recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Thunder will head out on the road to face off against the Red-Tailed Hawks at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Saturday, Discovery Canyon made easy work of Denver South and carried off an 11-2 victory.
Pierce Hafferkamp tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Luke Jensen was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jake Cody, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.
Discovery Canyon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Denver South only posted a batting average of .200.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Cheyenne Mountain, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They blew past Vista Ridge 11-3 on Saturday. The win continues a trend for the Red-Tailed Hawks in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won three in a row.
Luke Schriever looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jansen Roberts was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Nate Glad was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Cheyenne Mountain pushed their record up to 12-5-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Discovery Canyon, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.
Cheyenne Mountain's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Discovery Canyon has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Cheyenne Mountain, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Discovery Canyon's sizable advantage in that area, the Red-Tailed Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.
Discovery Canyon skirted past Cheyenne Mountain 6-5 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Will the Thunder repeat their success, or do the Red-Tailed Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
