CLASS 4-A FOOTBALL
Bettendorf won the battle of Mississippi Athletic Conference powers last week, as the 4-A top-ranked Bulldogs ousted number-five Davenport Assumption 21-13. With the win, Bettendorf solidified its hold as the top team among Iowa's large-school class and the favorite to win the MAC title. Assumption is still in the hunt, but dropped to ninth in the latest Iowa Associated Press ratings. Despite being outgained and outplayed at times, the Bulldogs took advantage of big plays on special teams to beat Assumption for the sixth time in the last seven meetings of the MAC superpowers. A 31-yard punt return from Garrett Scott set up a four-yard touchdown run from Anthony Losasso for Bettendorf's first score. Another 23-yard punt return set up an eight-yard reverse from Billy Rembold for the final result.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson running back Terrell McBride put on quite a show for J-Hawk fans last week, but his team could not come up with the win as West Waterloo held off Jefferson 31-28 in a Mississippi Valley Conference encounter at Kingston Stadium. McBride racked up 245 yards of rushing offense, including touchdown runs of 75 and 99 yards. The 99-yard TD run set a Jefferson school record. McBride also contributed on the other side of the scrimmage line, intercepting two passes and returning one interception 75 yards for a touchdown. The difference in the contest was Ryan Edwards' 40-yard field goal with just under seven seconds remaining. The victory was the third straight for West, which is now 3-0 for the first time in 13 years. Jefferson dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
CLASS 3-A FOOTBALL
Wilmot Wellington has been zeroing on the goal line quite a bit for Fairfield this season. Already this year, Wellington has already scored nine touchdowns through three games this year, including five major scores in last week's 41-21 win over Washington. The senior running back rushed 36 times for 306 yards in the Trojans' victory. Wellington's 306 yards were part of a 518 yard rushing performance by Fairfield in the contest, as Mike Wiseman added 210 yards rushing, as well.
CLASS 2-A FOOTBALL
Wade McDonough was busy on both sides of the ball for East Sac County last week. In his team's 18-12 win over Emmetsburg, McDonough caught eight passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score. Meanwhile, McDonough also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the win over the E-Hawks.
CLASS 1-A FOOTBALL
West Lyon showcased its star running back last week in a 26-8 win over Hinton. Chris Tracy carried the ball 22 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over the Blackhawks. Tracy's touchdowns came on runs of 32, 48, and two yards.
CLASS A FOOTBALL
Madrid's Nate Anderson led his team to a 35-7 win over North Mahaska last week. Anderson rushed for 268 yards and two touchdowns. He also intercepted an opposing pass on defense.
EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL:
Lenox quarterback Seth Robinson saw a lot of the goal line last week in his team's 62-6 victory over Lamoni. Robinson ran for four touchdowns and passed for three others.by halftime. Lenox led the 42-6 at that point and played reserves as they went on to the victory. Robinson ended the contest with 104 yards rushing and 90 yards passing. Through three contests, the unbeaten Tigers have defeated their opponents by an average score of 67-9.
FOOTBALL, ETC.
Centerville, North Tama, Northeast of Goose Lake, and Johnston are the only teams in Iowa that are unbeaten, and unscored upon, through the first third of the Iowa high school football season. Grandview Park Baptist and Pella Christian are unbeaten in three games for the first time in their school histories. In college football, rivalry trophies include the Old Oaken Bucket, Floyd of Rosedale, the Little Brown Jug, and so on. In the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the big prep football prize is..the Boot. The Battle for the Boot takes place at Bates Field this weekend when Iowa City West plays cross-town rival City High. The City High Little Hawks have dominated the series 26-12, including last year's 28-10 win over the Trojans. West will be looking for its first win of the season, while City High is 2-1.
VOLLEYBALL
Ankeny is the top-ranked large school team in the state right now, and the Hawkettes ran their record to 14-0 with a four-game win over number three Johnston Wednesday night. Johnston fell to 14-1 with the loss. The match paired the only two Class 4-A unbeatens heading into the match and gave Ankeny a leg up in its run for a Central Iowa Metropolitan League Central Conference title. Ankeny used 90 percent serving and Hannah Johnson's 10 kills and five blocks in the victory.
