The Big Sky Eagles will take on the Butte Bulldogs at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Big Sky is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Big Sky is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Montana's top teams: Helena, who was ranked seventh at the time (Big Sky was ranked 11th). The Eagles fell just short of the Bengals by a score of 4-3 on Thursday. The matchup marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Kyler Latrielle made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Butte, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Capital with a sharp 10-1 win on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Bulldogs needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
Brea Henderson looked comfortable as she tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mattie Stepan, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Reese Johnson, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Butte's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-12. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Big Sky, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-4.
Big Sky's speedy runners might be the difference in Saturday's match. The Eagles have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Butte, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Big Sky continue to outrun the ball?
Big Sky was able to grind out a solid victory over Butte in their previous meeting back in April, winning 10-6. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Bulldogs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
