The Sissonville Indians are taking a road trip to face off against the Ritchie County Rebels at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sissonville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Sissonville is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Doddridge County, who was ranked second at the time (Sissonville was ranked fifth). The Indians fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 10-9 on Friday. That makes it the first time this season the Indians have let down their home crowd.
Deacon Moore made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Layne Coffman, who went 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Ritchie County might've scored the first runs on Friday, but it was Gilmer County who claimed the real prize. The Rebels came up short against the Titans, falling 19-4. The Rebels haven't had much luck with the Titans recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Ritchie County saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Turner Shriver, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one double. Shriver also put up an RBI, which was his first of the season. Another was Landon Shiflet, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Ritchie County's record now sits at 0-9. As for Sissonville, the loss was their first at home, dropping their record down to 4-2.
Ritchie County's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Saturday. Sissonville has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Ritchie County, though, as they've been averaging only 3.7 strikeouts. Will Sissonville keep running through batters, or will the Rebels buck the trend?
Sissonville was able to grind out a solid win over Ritchie County in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, winning 13-8. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Indians since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
