Basketball Recap: Concord Academy Piles Up the Points Against Gaston Christian

Concord Academy came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 38.6 points) and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 62-34 victory over the Gaston Christian Eagles. Concord Academy has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 matches by 28 points or more this season.

Concord Academy found their leader in freshman Justice Alexander, who went 8 for 19 on her way to 24 points and eight rebounds. Alexander's evening made it seven games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Taylor Smith, who went 6 of 12 en route to 12 points along with seven assists and five steals.

Gaston Christian's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Happy Arune, who posted seven points in addition to 13 boards and four blocks. Arune has been hot, having posted ten or more rebounds the last five times she's played. Sophie Mueller was another key player, putting up five points.

Concord Academy has been performing well recently as they've won 14 of their last 17 games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. As for Gaston Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Concord Academy will challenge Gaston Day at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Concord Academy is facing Gaston Day at the right time seeing as Gaston Day is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Gaston Christian, they will take on Metrolina Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Gaston Christian is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.7 points per game this season.
