James River Midlothian had lost 13 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 2-14 to make it 14. They lost 14-6 to the Deep Run Wildcats. The Rapids were not able to make up for their loss to the Wildcats from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.
Hailey Metacarpa and Georgia Swenck did some serious damage despite the final result: Metacarpa got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Swenck went 2-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that Swenck has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Smith, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
As for Deep Run, their record now sits at 10-8. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won seven matches by eight runs or more so far this season.
On Deep Run's side, Emily Plank made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave Plank a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Deep Run let Braelyn Baulsir and Brooke Black run wild. Baulsir got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and one stolen base, while Black went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those four runs gave Baulsir a new career-high. Hope Tate was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
Coming up, James River Midlothian will be playing in front of their home fans against Richmond High School for the Arts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Deep Run, they will head out on the road to take on Freeman at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wildcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Mavericks have averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season.
