After a string of four wins, the Clayton Comets's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell 68-60 to Garner. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Clayton's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Justice Mitchell, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds. Mitchell has been hot recently, having posted 17 or more points the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Grimes, who scored 11 points along with eight assists and five rebounds.
Clayton's defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 15-5. As for Garner, their victory was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Clayton will challenge the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Southeast Raleigh will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 162nd, while the Comets are ranked 44th). As for Garner, they will head out on the road to face off against the Bengals at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fuquay - Varina and the Trojans are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
