The Annandale Atoms suffered their biggest defeat since December 13, 2023 on Wednesday. They took a serious blow against Mount Vernon, falling 64-26. While losing is never fun, Annandale can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 265th, while Mount Vernon is ranked 120th).
When it comes to explaining why Annandale lost, one person who can't be blamed is Susan Aburish. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. That's the first time this season that Aburish pulled down eight or more rebounds.
Annandale has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season. As for Mount Vernon, their win bumped their record up to 7-5.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Annandale won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Falls Church at 5:45 p.m. on January 18th. As for Mount Vernon, they will head out on the road to face off against Thomas Jefferson Science & Technology at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
