Kara Mekulsia made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 14 over six innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 5-for-6 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. Those five hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Tori Semple and Gianna LaMarco did most of the damage at the plate: Semple got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while LaMarco went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI LaMarco has posted since back in April. Ally Negin also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.
Madison always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .565. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lake Catholic only posted an OBP of .167.
Meanwhile, Elyria Catholic put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over Padua Franciscan.
Like Madison, Elyria Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Kailey Tomasch. She struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Tomasch was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Elyria Catholic let Jessica Conner and Hannah Brooks run wild. Conner went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run, while Brooks went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Paytin Baehr, who earned four RBI and one stolen base.
Elyria Catholic's victory was their 14th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-0. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Madison, their record now sits at 12-4.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Madison has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .491. However, it's not like Elyria Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .483. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
