Football Recap: Seth Mayberry's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Plainview over Cooper

Plainview's game on Friday was all tied up 21-21 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a 56-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cooper Cougars. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (42), the Bulldogs still had to take the loss.

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Seth Mayberry, who threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 50 yards and one score. Mayberry is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in each of the last five games he's played. Another pass catcher making a difference was Jordan Porter, who picked up 182 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Cooper had a senior duo take command as Jaden Carrillo rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.4 yards per carry and Peyton Ewing rushed for 134 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. Ewing also punched in two rushing touchdowns, which is notable because the Cougars are undefeated when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns, but 2-3 otherwise.

Plainview has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 39.3 points over those games. As for Cooper, their record is now 5-3.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Plainview will square off against rival Palo Duro at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 990 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Cooper is set to take on their familiar foe Legacy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
