After a string of nine wins, the Mendenhall Tigers's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of Newton by a score of 62-59. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Despite the loss, Mendenhall still got an impressive performance from Montavis Hobbs, who scored 30 points along with nine blocks and seven rebounds. That was a full 50.8% of Mendenhall's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jay Rankin, who scored three points along with nine assists and six steals.
Mendenhall's loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-4. As for Newton, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mendenhall and Morton will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. One thing working in Morton's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matches. As for Newton, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Lake at 7:30 p.m.
