Basketball Recap: Logan Molina's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mater Brickell Academy over Varela

If Mater Brickell Academy was feeling good fresh off their 57-20 takedown of Booker T. Washington last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Mater Brickell Academy Bulls came up short against the Varela Vipers on Tuesday, falling 68-43. The Bulls were down 51-30 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.

Several Bulls players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Logan Molina, who posted 12 points. That's the most points Molina has posted since back in January of 2024. Sergio Murtinho was another key player, putting up four points and three steals.

Leading Varela to victory were Aaron Reyes and Christian Marquez. Reyes went 8 of 11 en route to 22 points and five assists, while Marquez went 9 for 12 on his way to 20 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Perez, who scored six points along with five boards and three steals.

Mater Brickell Academy's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-15. As for Varela, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season.

Mater Brickell Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 50-41 loss against Archbishop Carroll on the 22nd. Varela has also already played their next matchup, a 59-50 defeat against Coral Park on the 23rd.
