Sahuarita is 7-2 against Nogales since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Sahuarita Mustangs will host the Nogales Apaches at 4:00 p.m. Sahuarita is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Sahuarita was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against River Valley last Saturday. Sahuarita blew past River Valley 8-1. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Dust Devils: they've now won three in a row.
Destiny Bencomo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brenna Figueroa, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Eliana Romero, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Sahuarita was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as River Valley only posted a batting average of .118.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Nogales). They walked away with a 25-20 win over Cholla on Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Apaches needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.
Zendy Peralta was a standout: she got on base in five of her six plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Emma Vejar, who went 3-for-5 with seven RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
The victory snapped Nogales' losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 5-4 record. As for Sahuarita, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
Wednesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sahuarita has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .456. However, it's not like Nogales struggles in that department as they've averaged .473. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Sahuarita's way against Nogales when the teams last played back in February of 2024, as Sahuarita made off with a 14-1 victory. Does Sahuarita have another victory up their sleeve, or will Nogales turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
