Baseball Recap: Montpelier Has No Trouble Against Hicksville

Montpelier was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last match, but they sure didn't let that happen against Hicksville on Friday. The Locomotives were the clear victors by a 13-6 margin over the Aces. Considering the Locomotives have won nine games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Wesley Hartsock made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his six plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Hayden Sharps and Kenneth Smeltzer did most of the damage at the plate: Sharps got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Smeltzer got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Sharps has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Xavier Eidenier also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Montpelier's win bumped their record up to 16-4. As for Hicksville, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season.

When Montpelier and Hicksville next hit the field, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. The Locomotives will square off against Fairview and their six-game winning streak at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Montpelier 3.8, the Apaches 2.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Hicksville will try to stop Edgerton's three-game winning streak when they meet at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
