Pender (Burgaw, N.C.) had one of the more incredible team rushing performances in high school football history last week, running for 912 yards in a 106-83 win over Hobbton (Newton Grove). Yet remarkably, the Patriots are still nearly 100 yards behind the all-time record holder.
Meadville (Pa.) rushed for 1,004 yards in a 107-90 win over DuBois in 2015. That total tops the newest addition to the MaxPreps National High School Football Record book – single-game team rushing yards.
Record Book: Single-game team rushing yards
Journey Brown broke the national record for individual rushing yards in that game, rushing for 722 yards. Meadville broke the record of 893 yards set by
Centerville (Texas) in 2003. Pender is just the second team to rush for over 900 yards in a single game.
Stigler (Okla.) held the record for 54 yards after rushing for 788 yards in a 219-0 win over Fort Gibson in 1924.
Twin Valley South (West Alexandria, Ohio) broke the mark with 790 yards in 1978 and
West Memphis (Ark.) took possession of the record in 2000 with 878 yards. Centerville broke West Memphis' mark in 2003.
The previous high single game total this year was 782 yards by Liberty Hill in an 82-80 win over Hutto.
In action here against South Columbus in September, junior running back Jeremiah Johnson provided 377 of Pender's 912 rushing yards Friday night against Hobbton. (Photo: John Ball)
