The Pensacola Tigers will head out to challenge the Destin Sharks at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Pensacola is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Pensacola was handed a ten-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Thursday. They won by a run and slipped past Lighthouse Private Christian Academy 9-8.
Alexiah Federico was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sydney Jauncey, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-3. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played.
Meanwhile, Destin hadn't done well against Central recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Everything went Destin's way against Central as Destin made off with a 13-3 win. The Sharks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by ten runs or more this season.
Like Pensacola, Destin also got a great game from a two-way player: Aspen Benscoter. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Benscoter was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing Three bases. while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
In other batting news, Destin let Keelie Ellis and Anita Palmer run wild. Ellis scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Palmer scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Laurel Churchill, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Destin has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 11.14 hits in those games compared to only 3.67 in the others. Pensacola's victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Pensacola has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Destin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Pensacola suffered a grim 18-0 defeat to Destin in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Pensacola avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
