Even though the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Thunderbirds have not done well against the Springfield Tigers recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 67-65 victory over Springfield. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
Springfield's loss came despite strong showings from Brayden Sturm and Ben Potter. Sturm dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten rebounds, while Potter scored 19 points along with six rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Potter has scored all season. Isaac Fredin was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with three steals.
Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 13-9 record this season. As for Springfield, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop is on the road again on Friday and plays Sibley East at 6:00 p.m. on February 9th. Sibley East knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matches -- so hopefully Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop likes a good challenge. As for Springfield, they will head out on the road to square off against Sleepy Eye at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Minnesota (Springfield is ranked 150th, while Sleepy Eye is ranked 155th).
