Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elko). They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 62-59 victory over the Owyhee Braves on Tuesday. The win was nothing new for the Indians as they're now sitting on three straight.
Despite the defeat, Owyhee saw an underclassman step up: freshman Micah Phoenix went 6 of 13 en route to 18 points. Those 18 points gave Phoenix a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Rolando Espitia, who went 6 for 9 on his way to 13 points.
Elko's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-10. As for Owyhee, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 5-13 record.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elko will venture away from home to square off against Fernley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Elko has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. Owyhee has already played their next contest (against Lund), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
