Baseball Recap: Maricopa Wins Going Away Against Flowing Wells

Maricopa not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since March 28, 2024. Everything went their way against the Flowing Wells Caballeros as they made off with a 10-4 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Rams also won the last time the pair played back in March of 2015.

Travis Varela made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.

In other pitching news, Grayson Bunte looked comfortable as he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

Back at the plate, Patrick Pettis and Jovanny Sanchez did most of the damage at the plate: Pettis went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run, while Sanchez scored three runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave Sanchez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Will Hawkins, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.

Maricopa kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 2-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

With the win, Maricopa broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-13. As for Flowing Wells, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-16-1 record this season.

Maricopa will take on Vista Grande at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Flowing Wells, they will challenge Pueblo at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Caballeros are facing the Warriors at the right time seeing as the Warriors are stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
