It was a good run, but the Oakcrest Chargers unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Thursday. They lost to Saint John Paul the Great Catholic at home by a decisive 55-39 margin. Oakcrest found out winning isn't easy when you make six fewer threes than your opponent.
Despite the defeat, Oakcrest saw an underclassman step up: Kate Newsome scored 13 points along with five blocks. Mary Mehan was another key contributor, scoring six points along with 16 rebounds.
Saint John Paul the Great Catholic was led to victory by Saleema Tinner and Nina Velandria. Tinner dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Velandria scored 21 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Velandria has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Angelica Morales, who scored three points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Oakcrest's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-6. As for Saint John Paul the Great Catholic, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a massive bump to their 6-7 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oakcrest will face off against Chelsea Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Chelsea Academy will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive. As for Saint John Paul the Great Catholic, they will head out on the road to challenge Fredericksburg Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Fredericksburg Christian focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight last Monday.
