Southeast is 0-8 against Cardinal Mooney since April of 2021 but things could change on Thursday. Southeast fell victim to Lemon Bay and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They lost 22-0 to the Manta Rays. The Seminoles just can't catch a break and have now endured seven defeats in a row.
Southeast saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alicia Martinez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Mooney hadn't done well against Clearwater Central Catholic recently (they were 1-6 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Marauders 3-2. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.
Kaitlyn Will spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Olivia Lockhart was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4. Caroline Rooney also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Cardinal Mooney hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive matchups.
Cardinal Mooney's record is now 7-3. As for Southeast, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Southeast has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .556. However, it's not like Cardinal Mooney struggles in that department as they've averaged .456. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Southeast might still be hurting after the 19-1 defeat they got from Cardinal Mooney in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Seminoles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
