Toll Gate and Johnston are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Titans will challenge the Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Toll Gate will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Saturday, then bounced right back against North Providence on Monday. The Titans never let the Cougars get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Titans, who have now won six contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Liv Cota was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Emma Harold also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Toll Gate always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .586. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as North Providence only posted an OBP of .059.
Meanwhile, Johnston faced Portsmouth in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Panthers came out on top against the Patriots by a score of 4-0.
Not much got past Haley Boudreau, who gave up just three hits and racked up 17 Ks to keep Portsmouth off the board. Boudreau has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kalyn Foster, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Toll Gate is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Johnston, their record now sits at 8-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Toll Gate has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Johnston struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 11.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Toll Gate couldn't quite finish off Johnston in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can the Titans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
