Boyd County and Rowan County are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Lions will look to defend their home field on Monday against the Vikings at 6:00 p.m. Boyd County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Boyd County is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Highlands just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Bluebirds by a score of 12-11.
Myla Hamilton and Savanna Henderson stepped up to the plate in a big way. Hamilton went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Henderson scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Jadyn Goad, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-6.
Meanwhile, Rowan County entered their tilt with Cranberry Area on Thursday with six consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with seven. They walked away with a 6-2 victory over the Berries.
Kassi Perkins made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Diamond Wills and Kelbie Ford did most of the damage at the plate: Wills scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-4, while Ford scored a run and stole two bases. Those two stolen bases gave Ford a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Malana Hamm, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Rowan County's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Boyd County, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Boyd County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Rowan County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Boyd County came up short against Rowan County when the teams last played back in May of 2024, falling 7-2. Can the Lions avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
