High school basketball: Mackenzie Mgbako, Matas Buzelis, Mikey Williams among impact transfers for 2022-23 season

Prep level offseason busy with nearly 200 prospects on the move.

Elite high school basketball programs are reloading once again this offseason through the prep version of the transfer portal with programs like AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.), IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), Link Academy (Branson, Mo.), Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.), Southern California Academy (Castaic, Calif.) and Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) among the most active.

Defending New Jersey Tournament of Champions winner Roselle Catholic (Roselle, N.J.) may have made the biggest individual splash in the off-season as the Lions added Mackenzie Mgbako, regarded as the No. 5 prospect in the Class of 2023.

Other top 10 prospect on the move include Matas Buzelis, the No. 7 prospect in the Class of 2023 headed to Sunrise Christian Academy; Sean Stewart, the No. 8 prospect in the Class of 2023 attending Montverde Academy; Bryson Tucker, the No. 5 prospect in the Class of 2024 headed to IMG Academy; Vyctorius Miller, the No. 6 prospect in the Class of 2024 transferring to AZ Compass Prep; Elliot Cadeau, the No. 7 prospect in the Class of 2024 joining Link Academy; and Trentyn Flowers, the No. 8 prospect in the Class of 2024 attending Rosedale Christian Academy (Baltimore).

California is the destination for eleven of the more high-profile transfers this spring. Former Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) guards Caleb Foster and Mercy Miller are headed to Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.); Trey Green, Aden Holloway, Paul McNeil and Yves Missi are attending Prolific Prep; Isaiah Miranda, Braelon Green and Garwey Dual are transferring to Southern California Academy and A.J. Johnson is playing with Donda Academy (Simi Valley, Calif.). Mikey Williams — the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year in 2019-20 — is on his way back to San Ysidro (San Diego).

Williams, the No. 22 prospect in the Class of 2023, is one of the highest-rated rising seniors to make transfer plans public. He scored 77 points in a game during his freshman campaign at the San Diego school.
