The Westbrook Blue Blazes will square off against the Cheverus Stags at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Westbrook is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Wednesday just wasn't the day for Westbrook's offense. They came up short against Gorham on Wednesday, falling 10-0. The Blue Blazes have struggled against the Rams recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Westbrook saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emma Boulette, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.
Meanwhile, Cheverus strolled into their game on Wednesday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They never let Kennebunk get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. The Stags might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by ten runs or more this season.
Addison DeRoche was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 15 over six innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hailey Lamontagne, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Cheverus hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive matches.
Cheverus' victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-0. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Westbrook, their loss dropped their record down to 7-4.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Westbrook has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .468. However, it's not like Cheverus struggles in that department as they've averaged .539. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westbrook suffered a grim 18-3 defeat to Cheverus in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Blue Blazes have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
