Broken Bow hasn't had much luck against Gothenburg recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Indians will welcome the Swedes. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Aidan Markham and Evan Johnson.
On Friday, Broken Bow ended up a good deal behind Central City and lost 34-20. While losing is never fun, the Indians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska football rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while the Bison are ranked ninth).
Meanwhile, Gothenburg entered their tilt with Minden on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 27-6 margin over the Whippets. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Swedes had established a 20-point advantage.
Gothenburg found their leader in sophomore Beck Groene, who picked up two sacks and made nine total tackles. Torren Wind was in the mix too, providing the Swedes with two TDs.
Gothenburg's run defense was locked in: Minden could only muster 2.3 yards per carry. The team can thank Groene for the heroic effort on defense: he. Gothenburg's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 3.7.
Gothenburg's defense also made the game a nightmare for Cole Schwenka, racking up ten sacks. Kingston Koehn led the group effort, picking up three of those sacks all by himself. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven.
Gothenburg's victory bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Broken Bow, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-5.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Broken Bow has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 243.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Gothenburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 223 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Broken Bow was taken down by Gothenburg 35-7 in their previous meeting back in October of 2024. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Indians were down 21-0.
