The Thomaston Bears will square off against the St. Paul Catholic Falcons on Wednesday. Thomaston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Thomaston is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They blew past Vinal RVT 24-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Bears.
Sloan Walmsley made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Jackie Phillips and Addison Patchell did most of the damage at the plate: Phillips went 2-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Patchell went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most hits Patchell has posted since back in April. Brie Beaudoin also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Thomaston kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 20 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, St. Paul Catholic faced Southington in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Falcons walked away with a 5-2 victory over the Blue Knights.
Breyona Demora spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Laila McCulloch, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and one stolen base. Taylor Williams was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
St. Paul Catholic has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Thomaston, their record now sits at 13-9.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Thomaston has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .457. However, it's not like St. Paul Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .526. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Thomaston came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Paul Catholic when the teams last played back in June of 2016, sneaking past 3-2. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Falcons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
