Basketball Recap: Sunnyside Comes Up Short

Sunnyside was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 67-65 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions. The Blue Devils were not able to make up for their loss to the Mountain Lions from their previous meeting back in December of 2024.

Despite the loss, Sunnyside still got an impressive performance from Nathan Schofield, who went 5-for-8 on his way to 22 points and seven rebounds. Schofield is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 20 every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Carlos Cardenas, who shot 67% from the field to rack up 15 points.

Sunnyside's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Mountain Ridge, their win ended a six-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-3.

Looking ahead, Sunnyside will head out to challenge Gilbert at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will be up against the Tigers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 55 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Mountain Ridge, they will host Maryvale at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mountain Lions will need to watch out since the Panthers have now posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
