Middle Tennessee Christian is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They claimed a resounding 62-14 win over Grace Baptist Academy. With the Cougars ahead 48-0 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Middle Tennessee Christian's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Riley Brown, who rushed for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Le'Marlo Nichols, who rushed for 62 yards and one TD.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Middle Tennessee Christian was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 393 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 167 rushing yards in seven consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Trinity Christian Academy came tearing into Friday's game with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 35 points), and they left with even more momentum. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 55-7 win over the Falcons. Considering the Lions have won seven contests by more than 25 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Middle Tennessee Christian better keep an eye on Owen Atwood. He was instrumental in Trinity Christian Academy's win, rushing for 72 yards and three scores, while also throwing for 88 yards and one touchdown. Atwood didn't just play on offense: he also made three total tackles (0.5 for loss) and defended one pass. Gabe Lee made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Trinity Christian Academy didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Lee and Lake Helton. Lee got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Middle Tennessee Christian's record now sits at 6-3. As for Trinity Christian Academy, their record is now 9-2.
Middle Tennessee Christian was able to grind out a solid victory over Trinity Christian Academy when the teams last played back in September of 2022, winning 34-21. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
