Gray's Creek and Lumberton are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2022, but likely not for long. The Bears will head out on the road to face off against the Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gray's Creek will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
On Thursday, Gray's Creek needed a bit of extra time to put away Cape Fear. They skirted past the Colts 6-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Gray's Creek's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Dalton Williams, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Lumberton posted their closest win since April 4th on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over Purnell Swett. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Pirates.
The team relied heavily on Issac Simmons, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Brody Stueck, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Gray's Creek's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-8. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.1 runs over those games. As for Lumberton, their record now sits at 15-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Gray's Creek has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Lumberton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Gray's Creek's way against Lumberton when the teams last played back in April, as Gray's Creek made off with a 14-7 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bears since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
