After a string of five wins, the Gray Collegiate Academy War Eagles's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell 34-25 to North Augusta. While losing is never fun, Gray Collegiate Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while North Augusta is ranked seventh).
Gray Collegiate Academy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Karlee Phelps, who scored six points along with eight rebounds and seven blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Kadence Walker-lee, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds.
North Augusta's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Celena Grant (new) led the charge by scoring 14 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Madison McCain was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Gray Collegiate Academy's loss dropped their record down to 9-7. As for North Augusta, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gray Collegiate Academy will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Legion Collegiate Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for North Augusta, they will be playing at home against Airport at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
