Newtown has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on The Pomperaug Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Newtown knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully Pomperaug likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, Newtown faced West Haven in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Newtown took a 41-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of West Haven. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Newtown's loss came about despite a quality game from J.j. Haddick, who rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Ayden Paulos, who gained 117 total yards.
Meanwhile, Pomperaug can now show off four landslide victories after their most recent matchup on Friday. They claimed a resounding 34-6 win over Stratford on the road. The victory was just what Pomperaug needed coming off of a 43-22 loss in their prior match.
Pomperaug's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Carter Frank, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries, and Cooper Simmons, who rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries.
With Newtown's loss and West Haven's victory, both teams now sport identical 6-1 records.
Everything came up roses for Newtown against Pomperaug in their previous meeting back in September of 2022 as the team secured a 49-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newtown since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
