Tupelo is a perfect 4-0 against Lewisburg since October of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Golden Wave will host the Patriots at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Tupelo has four straight victories, Lewisburg has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Tupelo is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Horn Lake: they outscored them in every quarter. The Golden Wave were the clear victors by a 38-13 margin over the Eagles on Friday. Considering the Golden Wave have won five matchups by more than 20 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Tupelo's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Braylen Williams, who rushed for 80 yards and a pair of TDs, and also threw for 83 yards and one touchdown. Another rusher making a difference was Jaeden Hill, who gained 115 total yards and a touchdown.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Tupelo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 222 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 222 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Tupelo didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Iverson McCoy. Another thorn in Horn Lake's side was Jareylan McCoy, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made six total tackles (3.0 for loss).
The home team had come away the winner the last four times Lewisburg and Hernando had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Patriots came up short against the Tigers on Friday, falling 52-31. The Patriots were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-10.
Despite the defeat, Lewisburg saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kaysen Wiggins threw for 327 yards and one TD while picking up 10.5 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 49 yards and one score. The Patriots' leading receiver Cael Riden was Wiggins' top target yet again, picking up 178 receiving yards.
Lewisburg's loss dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Tupelo, their win bumped their record up to 8-1.
Thursday's game might be decided on the ground. Tupelo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 284.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Lewisburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 152.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Tupelo against Lewisburg when the teams last played back in November of 2024, as the squad secured a 48-7 victory. In that matchup, the Golden Wave amassed a halftime lead of 42-0, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Thursday.
