SHELBY, N.C. - After taking the lead in overtime,
Crest (Shelby, N.C.) held on for a 23-17 victory over
Northern Guilford (Greensboro, N.C.) on Saturday. The difference for the Chargers was that
PJ Brooks ran for a touchdown.
After taking the lead on an
Austin Coltrane touchdown pass to
Mook Reynolds, the Nighthawks went into halftime with a 10-0 lead. The Chargers took the lead for good with a touchdown run by Brooks in the fifth quarter.
Despite scoring 10 points in the third, Crest still trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter. But seven points in the fourth helped CHS pull out the victory.
The loss came as a surprise for Northern Guilford, which entered the game ranked No. 7 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for North Carolina, while the Shelby school was ranked No. 19.
The Chargers had given up an average of 16.6 points prior to the contest. The 17 points that NG ended with were well below its average of 29.5 coming into the game.
The defeat comes as a step back for Northern Guilford, which notched a 22-19 victory over Weddington in its previous outing.
