Wayne Christian unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the St. Thomas More Academy Chancellors by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. While the Eagles didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Chancellors 25-17 in the first set.
Wayne Christian wouldn't go down easily and took St. Thomas More Academy into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking three-point loss. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 17-25, 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12.
Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Alanna Verme, who had 25 kills, nine aces, and six digs. The team also got some help courtesy of Hannah Brock, who had four digs and three aces.
Portia Hale had an outrageously good game for St. Thomas More Academy as she had 21 digs and three aces. That's the most aces Hale has posted since back in October of 2024.
St. Thomas More Academy has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.
Coming up, Wayne Christian will face off against Freedom Christian Academy at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. As for St. Thomas More Academy, they will take on Rocky Mount Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
