Basketball Recap: Bernalillo Comes Up Short

After flying high against Del Norte last Tuesday, Bernalillo came back down to earth. The matchup between the Bernalillo Spartans and the Hope Christian Huskies didn't end well, with the Bernalillo Spartans falling 61-47. The loss continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Huskies: they've now lost seven in a row.

Despite the defeat, Bernalillo saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Trinity Calabaza shot 56% from the field en route to 15 points along with six boards and five blocks. Calabaza has been hot, having posted two or more blocks the last eight times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Samaria Brown, who posted eight points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Bernalillo smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive games.

Hope Christian was led to victory by Bri Bishop and Mia Bishop. Bri dropped a triple-double with 26 points, 13 boards, and 12 steals, while Mia dropped a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Mia is becoming a predictor of Hope Christian's success: when she posts at least eight boards the team is 12-4 (and 5-6 when she doesn't). Adalynn Day was another key player, putting up six points in addition to 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Bernalillo's loss dropped their record down to 13-16. As for Hope Christian, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-10 record this season.

Bernalillo does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Hope Christian, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 57-52 defeat against Albuquerque Academy on the 1st.
