Even though the Santa Maria Saints scored an imposing 65 points on Tuesday, the Morro Bay Pirates still came out on top. Morro Bay had just enough and edged Santa Maria out 68-65. For Morro Bay, this counts as revenge for the 60-56 defeat Santa Maria walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2023.
Morro Bay was led to victory by Justin Campbell and Sands Doughtery. Campbell scored 14 points, while Doughtery scored 15 points. The matchup was Campbell's ninth in a row with at least ten points. Lucas Cords was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Morro Bay now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Santa Maria, their loss dropped their record down to 10-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Morro Bay's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pioneer Valley at 7:15 p.m. on January 12th. As for Santa Maria, they will take on Cabrillo at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Cabrillo is ranked 892nd, while Santa Maria is ranked 912th).
