The Lejeune Devil Pups came into Friday's match having lost nine straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 48-36 victory over Jones on Friday. Lejeune's offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Leading Lejeune to victory were Shyanne Bryant and Scarlett McLean. Bryant scored 17 points along with eight rebounds and three steals, while McLean scored 16 points along with six steals. It was the first time this season that McLean scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Iyanna Speight, who scored five points along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Jones lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Taylor Brown, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds. Brown is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Azaria Jemison, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Jones smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lejeune only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
Lejeune's win ended a seven-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-11. As for Jones, their loss was their seventh straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 3-14.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lejeune's homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Hurricanes at 6:00 p.m. on January 30th. Hopefully Pamlico County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Friday. As for Jones, they will be playing at home against the Mariners at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. East Carteret is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.
