The Highlands Bluebirds are taking a road trip to face off against the Woodford County Yellowjackets at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Highlands has 16 straight wins, Woodford County has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Friday, Highlands got the win against Dayton by a conclusive 17-2. The Bluebirds might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 contests by six runs or more this season.
Payton Brown and Bailee Class did most of the damage at the plate: Brown went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Class went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Alli Meyers also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Highlands always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .731. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Lafayette hit Woodford County with a five-run second inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Yellowjackets lost 10-3 to the Generals.
Lily Slayton made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Norah Ashburn, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
Highlands' victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-5-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Woodford County, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-12-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Highlands hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Woodford County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Highlands might still be hurting after the 15-2 loss they got from Woodford County in their previous matchup back in March of 2022. Can the Bluebirds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
