After a string of four wins, the Leigh Longhorns's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 83-78 defeat to they. Despite running the score up even higher than they did back in December of 2023 (71), they still had to take the loss.
Leigh lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Caleb Asante, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and 11 rebounds. Asante scored a full 33.3% of Leigh's points, the seventh time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Cooper Smith, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Leigh were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Leigh's loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 5-4. As for Santa Teresa, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season.
Leigh will play host again and welcome Oak Grove, where tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Oak Grove will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Santa Teresa, they will head out on the road to face off against Independence at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Independence is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
