Basketball Recap: Avon Comes Up Short

After flying high against North Central last Saturday, Avon came back down to earth. The Avon Orioles were outmatched by the Brownsburg Bulldogs and fell 80-44. The game marked the Orioles' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Several Orioles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Aniah Smith, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds. Smith is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Makaylee Butts, who posted seven points and three blocks.

It was another big night for Avery Gordon, who dropped a double-double on 33 points and 16 boards for Brownsburg. That makes it five consecutive games in which Gordon has scored at least a third of Brownsburg's points. Elle Mcculloch was another key player, going 5 of 10 on her way to 11 points and five assists.

Avon dropped their record down to 9-8 with the loss, which was their third straight at home. As for Brownsburg, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.

Avon will take on Cascade at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Avon is facing Cascade at the right time seeing as Cascade is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Brownsburg, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Pike at 7:30 p.m. on January 21st.
