The Scholars Guild Academy Spartans will head out to take on the Covington Academy Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Scholars Guild Academy is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
On Tuesday, everything went Scholars Guild Academy's way against Lyndon Academy as Scholars Guild Academy made off with a 19-1 victory. Fans of the Spartans have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.
Alanna Maher made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Noelle Boeckman was a standout: she got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Kerrigan Welch was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.
Scholars Guild Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Covington Academy faced Peachtree Academy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. Covington Academy came out on top against Peachtree Academy by a score of 8-4. The win was nothing new for the Bulldogs as they're now sitting on three straight.
Like Scholars Guild Academy, Covington Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Bryleigh Bragg. She struck out 14 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). Bragg was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Covington Academy let Peyton Ledoux and Elyssa Almazan run wild. Ledoux scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Almazan scored two runs while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs Almazan has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Makenzie Cowan, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Scholars Guild Academy's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-0. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 15.7 runs. As for Covington Academy, their record is now 4-2.
Thursday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Scholars Guild Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .579. However, it's not like Covington Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .474. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Scholars Guild Academy's way against Covington Academy when the teams last played two weeks ago, as Scholars Guild Academy made off with a 9-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Scholars Guild Academy since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
