Gray's Creek and South View are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but likely not for long. The Bears will be playing at home against the Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Gray's Creek sitting on four straight victories and South View on three.
On Thursday, Gray's Creek got the win against Purnell Swett by a conclusive 12-4. The Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 contests by eight runs or more this season.
Hannah Welsh made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Amariya Green, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Gray's Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Purnell Swett only posted an OBP of .344.
Meanwhile, South View earned a 7-2 win over Cape Fear on Thursday.
Like Gray's Creek, South View also got a great game from a two-way player: JORDYNN PARNELL. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off seven hits. PARNELL was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
In other batting news, DESTINY SHOULARS was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was MADDY CLARK, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
Gray's Creek pushed their record up to 20-2 with the victory, which was their 11th straight at home. As for South View, their win bumped their record up to 16-5.
Gray's Creek's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's game. The Bears have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for South View, though, as they've been averaging only 0.9 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Gray's Creek continue to outrun the ball?
Gray's Creek couldn't quite get it done against South View in their previous matchup back in April as they fell 3-0. Will the Bears have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
