2A-1 Region III District 10 recap October 22, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 2A-1 Region III District 10 this week, Newton beat Kountze 22-20. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
Kirbyville scaled the state rankings by moving to 301 from 344 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Wildcats climbed the ranks as a result of besting East Chambers 27-17.
Brandon Johnson was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 28 carries, he ran for 150 yards as Newton defeated Warren. Teammate Calum Foster added to the ground attack by rushing for 113 yards.
The Panthers' Josh Cooper and Riggs led 2A-1 Region III District 10 in both passing and receiving yards. Cooper has thrown for 619 yards this season, while Riggs has 18 catches for 351 yards. Johnson from W.T. Johnston's team leads the league in rushing with 978 yards.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when Anahuac's Riggs goes up against the Eagles' Roney Elam.
Johnson of the Newton is just 22 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 92 carries Johnson has accumulated 978 yard this year.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when the Panthers and the Eagles face off next week.
Next week's game between Anahuac and Newton will feature an aerial matchup as Cooper tests his arm against Elam's defensive ability.
The Panthers are in fifth place, while the Eagles are in first place.
The league will see a high scoring game when Anahuac and Newton face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Panthers comes in having scored 196 this season, while the Eagles have scored 282. Anahuac scored 43 points last week as it topped the Warriors.
The Panthers were the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from seventh to fifth in the league. Earlier in the week, Anahuac triumphed over Warren 43-13.
