Northeast Kansas recap September 24, 2013
Pleasant Ridge's Kyle Grantham recorded the longest rushing play in Northeast Kansas this season in his game against Oskaloosa last week. Grantham's team topped the Bears as he sprinted for 69 yards on the play and finished with 140 in all.
Fans got a thrill when Derrick Stone and Dakota Bayles connected against Troy. The connection went for 74 yards, the longest such play in the league this season.
Justin Varney threw for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns. He went 13-24 with 1 interception.
Stone was a passing and rushing force as Horton beat the Trojans. He completed 9 passes for 279 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 61 yards. Stone's key target this week was Bayles, who caught 3 passes for 150 yards.
Bayles was the best receiver in the league this week as the Chargers topped Troy. Jordan Mathias helped Horton's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 56 yards.
Varney put up the best numbers in passing as Immaculata lost to Jayhawk Linn. Varney's favorite target this week was Michael Valencia, who caught 7 passes for 125 yards.
Valencia was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Raiders lost to the Jayhawks. The 5-foot-10 junior.
Grantham was the most successful running back in Northeast Kansas this week. Nick Holmes also contributed to the rushing game with 139 yards on the ground.
Horton's Stone and Bayles have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Stone has thrown for 652 yards this season, while Bayles, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 10 catches for 300 yards. Holmes from Pleasant Ridge leads the league in rushing with 420 yards.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Maur Hill Prep-Mount Academy takes on Jackson Heights. The Ravens are in seventh place, while the Cobras are in first place.
There should be lots of points scored when Immaculata and Pat McCollim's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Sean Sachen's team comes in having scored 76 this season, while the Rams have scored 102. The Raiders scored 30 points last week as they fell to Jayhawk Linn.
Nick Dowell's team scaled the state rankings by moving to 149 from 178 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Chargers climbed the ranks as a result of defeating ron shelton's team 36-6.
