Wakefield is on a six-game streak of home wins, while Wake Forest is on an eight-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Wolverines will welcome the Cougars at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Tuesday, Wakefield made easy work of Rolesville and carried off a 13-3 victory. The win continues a trend for the Wolverines in their matchups with the Rams: they've now won nine in a row.
Aniela Piscorik spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on nine hits.
At the plate, Wakefield got a massive performance out of Kensley Harrison, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily Fernandez, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Wakefield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in 11 consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, while Wake Forest put up some runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for Heritage. The Cougars blew past the Huskies 6-0.
The result came thanks to Jil Livengood's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Kaylee Bowers was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Teagan Campbell, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Wakefield's victory bumped their record up to 20-2. As for Wake Forest, their win bumped their record up to 16-1.
Wakefield's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's matchup. The Wolverines have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Wake Forest, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Wakefield continue to outrun the ball?
Wakefield skirted past Wake Forest 6-5 in their previous meeting back in April. Do the Wolverines have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
