The Champaign Central Maroons will head out to face off against the Centennial Chargers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Champaign Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Champaign Central couldn't beat Rochester on Wednesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the third inning. The Maroons fell just short of the Rockets by a score of 8-7. The Maroons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Grace Bandy and Mya De La Cruz stepped up to the plate in a big way. Bandy went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs, while De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Roundtree, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Centennial was not the first on the board on Monday, but they got there more often. They put the hurt on Rantoul with a sharp 10-3 win. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Chargers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Zoe Goodreau made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maiyah Flemons, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in hits (three). Brylie Klaudt was another key player, going 1-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Champaign Central's loss dropped their record down to 22-3. As for Centennial, their record is now 6-13.
Centennial's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Champaign Central hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .390. It's a different story for Centennial, though, as they've only averaged .235. Will they be able to contain Champaign Central's hitters?
Champaign Central was able to grind out a solid win over Centennial when the teams last played on May 6th, winning 5-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Maroons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
