Softball Recap: Smithfield Takes Down Ranked Ponaganset

Smithfield faced Ponaganset in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Sentinels put the hurt on the Chieftains with a sharp 14-6 victory. The Sentinels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.

Maddie Bose spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Lily Riggin was incredible, going 4-for-6 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Joy Matteson also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Smithfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ponaganset only posted an OBP of .343.

Smithfield's win bumped their record up to 9-5. As for Ponaganset, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-10.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Smithfield is set to challenge their familiar foe Cranston West at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Sentinels 3.5, the Falcons 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Ponaganset will take on rival Chariho at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
